Stewart Downing: 'We must save Sam Allardyce'

Stewart Downing has urged his West Ham United teammates to produce a strong finish to the season in a bid to save manager Sam Allardyce's job.

The Hammers looked on course for just their second victory since January this afternoon until Marko Arnautovic struck a 95th-minute equaliser as Stoke City earned a 1-1 draw at Upton Park.

Allardyce's side have picked up five defeats and four draws from their last 10 games and, with the 60-year-old's contract up in the summer, an extension is not expected to be on the table.

However, Downing remains hopeful that the club's hierarchy will offer the under-fire manager a new deal but says that the team have a big part to play.

"We'd like him to stay. We don't know what the situation is," he told reporters. It's going to be resolved at the end of the season as he said yesterday I think. The only thing we can do is win games.

"This puts him in a stronger position to keep his job. Obviously he is disappointed today because wins help. Losing games and drawing games probably won't help him.

"Like I said, we are disappointed today. Whatever will be will be at the end of the season. I'm sure he'll want to get it sorted as soon as he can."

The East Londoners stay ninth in the Premier League table following the setback.

The players are in limbo ffs
They aren't stupid to officially say they want him gone.

The current situation is that no one knows what the owners will do in June.

If Downing said he wanted him gone, and he got another contract, he would be dead meat!

Re: Stockholm Syndrome
Allardyce might start trying to save his own job by stopping ridiculous substitutions with 25 minutes to go.

Substitutions that help the opposition by giving them more time on the ball and less to defend.

Time and again he does it Nolan for Song! Unless Songs legs are hanging off no way should that have happened, he keeps giving the initiative away and costing points with his stupid subs.

Allardyce - if the opposition haven't got the ball they can't hurt you.35% possession FFS that's a disgrace against a team like Stoke utter capitulation!

Maybe Downing should stop ducking out the way of free kicks when he's a one man wall then.

Didn't he say he was the best coach he'd had?

Re: Stockholm Syndrome
Performances aside I'm not sure why this necessarily makes downing a cunt?

Players are obviously going to have a different perspective, I suppose it depends on the motivation for this on whether it makes him a cunt or not.

You might disagree with him, but you can't fault his loyalty.

Re: Stockholm Syndrome
You know when a new manager starts within a month you have the same players saying how great he is and how he has revitalised the club etc
The old manager is never spoken of again

To be honest it's a bit unfair of the media to ask players about the managers future.
It would be nice for someone to be able or willing to admit that yesterday we were dismal and looked bereft of any imagination or anything resembling a functioning football team.
3 years of Premiership football gets us to a point with Nolan & Cole up front, poor Kouyate playing midfield on his own, 35% possession against Stoke and a complete inability to pass or move.
Time for a change

How about, irrespective of who the manager is, the 11 players on the pitch exhibit the physical and mental fortitude to see a game out. Starting to lose count of how many points have been thrown in the last minute of injury time this season.

Sounds more like "showing a bit of professionalism syndrome" to me.

Even if he is unable to match it on the field of play.
